IBADAN - PROVOST of the College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole, yesterday advocated a total ban of all forms overseas medical treatment both governments and private bodies in the country to give priority attention for the development of the nations health facilities even as he asked the NUC to stop the registration of new private Universities .

Prof. Adewole at a news conference to flag off the 25th anniversary of the College noted with regret the level of neglect that the nation's health system had witnessed and submitted that a ban of such habit could call attention to the poor state of health care in the country.

‘Said he,"though I dont agree with you that people go overseas to treat headaches, but talking seriuosly, I think the habit is unfortunate and not in the overall interest of the country. I think most of the sicknesses that people go abroad to treat can be treated locally.

To make matters worse, they could be going to doctors that are trained in Nigeria. I think banning the practice could be a good way of calling attention to our health care sector here.We have competent people here and I see no reason why people should be going abroad for treatment ‘'

He was of the view that the nation will save a lot of foreign exchange if the ban is effected and the same time call attention of those concerned to the level of work to be done to improve our health care sector.

Adewole, while soliciting for improved funding of the University system in Nigeria, contended that the attitude could be as a result of'' lack of confidence in the hospitals in Nigeria or an admission of failure on the part of the government that it had not done enough for the health care system in Nigeria''

Prof Adewole who advocated an enhanced funding of the University of Ibadan, If there is an old age disease, then the University of Ibadan is having it because as the oldest University in Nigeria, we need a lot more money for maintenance than, say ABU or UNILAG. If UNILAG needs N10 million then we will need N30 million because we have lot of things to maintain.I think the government should give special concession to us.
