NNAMDI Azikiwe University, Awka has expelled 123 of its students from various faculties for certificate forgery, just as the university yesterday, launched its Students' Electronic Identity Card aimed at flushing out illegal students from the university.

The university also suspended 94 students for examination malpractices. Both the expulsion and the suspension have been ratified by the Senate of the university.
The action of the university, according to the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Godson Okafor, is in line with the decision of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ilochi Okafor [SAN], to flush out from the university, students with fake results and fight examination malpractices to a halt.
The expulsion was a fall-out of the Certificate Verification exercise carried out by the management of the university for students admitted for the 2002/2003 academic session.
A faculty by faculty breakdown of figures indicates that the Faculty of Management Sciences has 32 students expelled, followed by the Faculty of Social Sciences with 26 students. Both the Faculties of Education, Engineering and Technology have 19 students expelled, each. The Faculty of Natural Sciences has 15 students expelled, while the Faculties of Arts and Law have 8 and 4 students expelled, respectively.
The university authorities have therefore warned all prospective students to ensure that they clear their Ordinary Level papers before applying for admission into the university because "no forgery will be tolerated."
Of the 94 students suspended for various examination malpractices, 48 of them were from the Faculty of Social Sciences, while 46 were from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The duration of their suspension ranged between one to three years. Their suspension was on account of the report of different Examination Malpractices Panels set up by the university.
Meanwhile, the Senate of the university has approved the study of Igbo Language as compulsory General Studies [GS] course in the university. And to encourage the study of Igbo Language, the university authority says it will offer scholarship to students studying the language in the university.
