The lecturer in a press conference at the NUJ press centre in Port Harcourt described as precarious the health situation of their colleague, hence the campaign for public assistance.

In his address, the chapter chairman of the union, Dr. Andrew Efemini, remarked that Mr. Chidi Okoro left Nigeria in 2001 on a Fulbright exchange programme to Loyola University, Chicago a very healthy young man. According to the chairman, Mr. Chidi Okoro while on the study programme, developed a medical problem which was diagnosed as kidney complications involving the two kidneys and as such has been on dialysis at St. Joseph Hospital Chicago, USA.

Dr. Efemini expressed as wonderfully amazing the decision of Chidi Okoro's sibling to donate one of his kidney, pointing out that the money needed for the operation is 165,000 United State Dollar (N21, 450,000). He then called on the government both federal and state, kindhearted individuals, corporate organizations, churches, non-governmental organizations, and the general public to give their little for the survival of this Nigeria in diaspora.

According to him, the donations could be made to the union through Dr. Anele, the ASUU chapter secretary or to Union Bank, UNIPORT branch account number 1112180001662.
