In a breezy six-day campaign that has taken the optimum consolidation campaign team of the Nigeria Union of local government employees to all councils in Rivers State, Apostle Godwin Tumini Diri, JP, has not seized to amplify his desire to improve workers' welfare if given the mandate of a second term at the union's sixth Quadrennial Delegates' Conference which is slated for Thursday 28th July, 2005 at the Delta Hotels, Port Harcourt.
Diri told council staff at Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor, Emohua and Port Harcourt that the union is the engine on which third-tier administration functions and so they deserve to be treated well always, insisting that no one would be allowed to place NULGE members as second class.
However, he enjoined them to be dutiful law-abiding and resourceful, while ensuring proper functions of the councils to be able to ask for improved attention from both the state governor and chairmen of their respective councils.
During his visit to Eleme, Tai Okrika and Asari-Toru LGAs, the message included prompting of staff to update their knowledge "since added personal value will metamorphose to improved salaries and allowances," thus exposing everyone to the dynamism in the system.
An example of the growth possibilities in the local government system is Dr. C.J.T. Ajie, campaign director of optimum consolidation who disclosed that he was employed with NCE, but now has become the "proud owner of a doctorate degree," maintaining that council workers can rise to the height of any career they choose.
Also speaking at the ASALGA rally, the union's VeePee, Barrister Franklin Ajinwo revealed that the once-stalled workers' welfare Loan Scheme would be revitalized from August this year to assist members who are in dire need.
He explained that the modalities for granting of such loans would be worked out with the branch chairmen who would recommend accordingly, based on immediacy as the situation would require, hinting that the interest-free loans really need the co-operation of the members who are expected to be faithful in their instalmental payments to succeed.
Meanwhile, all branch chairmen have been directed to make a strong and timely showing at the venue of the Delegates' Conference on Thursday. Furthermore, President Diri, who hope to be re-elected at the conference, has called on everyone to be of good conduct and not sully the image of the union in anyway.
