Lagos State government weekend said the rejuvenated KAI brigade corps have been mandated to act as environmental police by enforcing environmental sanitation laws, and encourage attitudinal change through the introduction of bagging of solid waste in the state to ensure a clean and sustainable environment.

This charge was given by the state Commissioner for Enviroment, Mr. Tunji Bello, at the passing out of 650 corps of KAI Brigade.
The new KAI Brigade was charged to discourage acts of indiscipline such as littering of the highways with refuse, improper disposal of waste on road median and verges, drainages/canals and other food wrappers, which are non-biodegradeable, as well as indiscriminate urination and defecation on public open places etc.

The campaign against indiscipline was an initiative of Governor Bola Tinubu, when he introduced the 'Project Clean up Lagos," charged specifically with a target of restoring the pride of Lagos, and making it one of the cleanest cities in Africa by the year 2007.

This campaign is aimed at re-invigorating consciousness and awareness to enable Lagosians re-orientate and re-direc their passions and aspirations towards the role and lofty ideals of good personal hygiene and self-discipline.

In an efforts to further ensure cleaner state, the Governor of Lagos, also inaugurate the KAI brigade in November 2003 as the Environmental sanitation laws. However, shortly after the inauguration of the Brigade, it performed well, as observed in several major spots in Lagos, but however lost focus due to indiscipline, lack of purposeful leadership, partisanship and other illegal activities.

As a responsible government that has focus and and direction, this situation was nibbed in the bud with the immediate disbandment of the brigade in May 2005,and his Excellency Asiwaju Bola Tinubu ordered for a reconstitution of the brigade.

Thereafter, the Ministry of the Environments set up a committee to review the organizational structure and operations of the Brigade in order to enhance its image. It is gratifying to note today that the state can of the graduate and non-graduate corps

Barrister Tunji Bello further solicited cooperation of all and sundry to uphold the ideals of promoting personal hygiene in our homes and the state in general. The process of building and ensuring a clean and healthy state should be a collective responsibility of all and sundry.
It is the ultimate desire of this administration to build a state inhabited by a discipline and organized society.

Therefore, it behooves on all to join the present campaign for a sustained drive towards achieving the KAI ideals.
