THE Southwest militia group, Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, has threatened to withdraw from public service. National Coordinator of the group, Chief Gani Adams who said this during the 2nd anniversary of its National Monitoring Committee explained that "nowhere has the OPC been criticised as in our involvement in keeping the onslaught of armed robbers in check.
For this noble service to our communities, we have been demonised by sections of the Police Force and some elements in the Nigeria media. Rather than words of encouragement, our lot in the hands of these people is full of abuse and victimization. To put a stop to all these unnecessary persecution and unfair treatment, the leadership of the OPC is considering withdrawing from public service"
According to him, the OPC cannot continue to risk the lives of its members for a society that is unsupportive and appreciative of this gesture, noting that "we would rather maintain a good name than keep suffering needlessly"
The OPC stalwart who said the OPC had been championing efforts towards bringing about lasting peace to the country, submitted that the establishment of its monitoring committee has put in check the excesses of OPC members in the society.
"The OPC has been a champion of the effort to bring lasting peace to the Nigerian federation. "Besides, establishing the monitoring team is a way of checking the excesses of our members so as to bring their actions to a publicly acceptable level".
The OPC and its leadership have been hyper-actively involved in the process of finding lasting peace, either in their immediate communities or at the national level." he said.
