M-Tel, a Disappointment - Communications Minister

Minister of Communications, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, has said NITEL Mobile Telecommunication, M-TEL, has disappointed the nation.

Minister of Communications, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, has said NITEL Mobile Telecommunication, M-TEL, has disappointed the nation.

Adebayo said this at his country home in Oke Onigbin, Isin Local Government area of Kwara State, noting that NITEL M-Tel has not lived up to expectations as "they have performed below my expectation but the battle we are fighting has become fairly open and quite appreciative."

The minister pointed out that the efficient services promised by M-TEL CEO at last year gathering was yet to be achieved. A feat, which he noted, affected the rural telephony programme of Federal Government.

Notwithstanding the minus, he was full of commendation to Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) who he said has braced all odds to perform excellently.

He described the international opinions on the success achieved in Nigeria as favourable and boasted that "ours is the fastest growing telecommunications market in the world and one of the most improved postal service."

Adebayo affirmed that "we would not be carried away by these encomiums instead, we would continue to work assiduously until communications facilities reach the nooks and crannies of Nigeria."

He hinted that Federal Government was pursuing the rural telephony programme which would further bring telephone services within the reach of rural dwellers.

Speaking further on NIPOST, the minister said the organisation is now working on a 48-hour mail delivery target, adding that incidence of mail pilfering and dumping has become a thing of the past.

"Indeed, NIPOST is repositioning itself to meet the challenges of modern day services," he observed, saying the appreciation of the progress in the sector has been extended to the international scene, adding that "we have become the postal bench mark for Africa and occupy a position of respect at the Universal Postal Union (UPU)."

"Therefore, we can with all sense of modesty and without any fear of contradiction say that we have been able to meet the expectations of the government and the people," he said.
