The police in Lagos have held a 21-year-old mother, who abandoned her baby after taking a drink. The young mother, unconcerned about the welfare of her abandoned baby, was sporting a brand new hair-do and a shimmering lace material, recently bought to start a new life .

Eyewitness account says that the lady, identified as Promise Obi, had abandoned her one-month-old baby at a restaurant in Amukoko, Lagos. The owner of the restaurant, Nkechi Uhegwu, said Obi had walked into her restaurant, asking for a bottle of soft drink. She explained that she had only briefly gone to the back of the shop, when Obi disappeared, leaving her unfinished soft drink and her baby behind.

Uhegwu said: " I waited till nightfall, but she didn't return. I took the baby to the police. They started looking for her. I heard that they used the certificate in a bag she left with the baby to locate the house of the man who impregnated her and later found her after days of endless search."
Obi told Daily Sun why she abandoned her baby. She said: " I am tired of suffering! And my family will kill me if they find out I have a baby. Moreover, the father is not ready to assist me financially in taking care of the baby."

Obi further explained that she chose to dump her baby girl at the restaurant of Uhegwu because someone told her the restaurant owner does not have a child.
Nobody appears to know where Obi was staying before she got pregnant. She only claimed to have stayed with a relation, who had moved to the East.
Obi said that the father of her child, one Nzoma Ike, bolted when he discovered she was expecting a baby. She had immediately laid siege to his friend's place, for him, where they had always met to make love, but sadly she learnt that the place was not his as he had always claimed.
She said: "His friend directed me to his house. There I found out that he stays in one room with his wife and three children."

That was not the only thing Obi discovered. She also learnt that Ike was an out-of-job carpenter, who was living off his wife. The wife earns a living for the family by peeling and selling melon.
But Ike's wife, Chidiebere, told Daily Sun that Obi was only three months gone when she stormed into their lives. She added: " There was nothing I could do other than to take her in. I registered her in hospital for antenatal. I was the one that took her to hospital when she was in labour.
"The day before she ran away with her child, she left home for a whole day. Nobody knew where she had gone. She left the baby for us. We were surprised to see her the next day. Immediately she came in, she packed her belongings and left with the baby. She said she was going to her brother's place in Festac Town."

But Obi said, she left because Chidiebere and Ike threatened to throw away her baby. She also claimed to have left because Chidiebere was starving her. She revealed to Daily Sun that she had N6000 with her which she planned to use to rent a room. She insisted she would have come back for her baby after she had found an accommodation. She, however, would not say, where she got the N6000.
