Traders cry out over alleged threat

Two traders at the Alaba International market, in the Ojo area of Lagos State, have raised an alarm over alleged threats to their lives by another trader over debts.

Two traders at the Alaba International market, in the Ojo area of Lagos State, have raised an alarm over alleged threats to their lives by another trader over debts.

The traders, Mr Ndubuisi Eze and Chima Ona, said a trader has been sending thugs in order not to pay N800,000:00, being debt from a business deal they transacted, to them.

The traders, who spoke through their counsel, Mr Godwin Agidi, explained that on March 19, 2005, a customer came to their shop and bought electrical materials worth N843,800. According to them, the man asked them to deliver the goods to the trader being complained about.

"On May 11, 2005, the same customer visited our shop and bought materials worth N1,260,000 and the customer told the our clients to deliver the goods to Mr. Christopher Obi at shop DD25, Alaba International market, Ojo," the lawyer said.

"Our clients informed that they delivered the said goods at the shop, and the customer handed the sum of N1,260,000 to Mr. Christopher, with the instruction to deliver the same to our clients. Mr. Christopher, however, handed the sum of N476,000 to Messrs Ndubuisi Eze and Chima Onah, with a promise to pay up the balance later".

Daily Sun gathered that when the duo demanded the remaining part of the money, the trader sent thugs. The traders, it was gathered, lodged a complaint with the Ojo police station.
"Several other complaints were made at the Area ‘E' police division as well as the Festac police division following incessant attacks on the traders who are owed," their lawyer said.

Barrister Agidi noted that his clients, have been unable to sleep in their house as the thugs continue to harass them. He also added that his clients' shops were locked up by unknown persons. "We thought the shop was locked by the chairman of the zone where my clients trade". "This is the only area where the rights of my clients could have been enforced. But as it is we don't have any idea of who locked the shop, so we could not enforced any right there. This is why we thought it wise to let the public know about this intimidation".
When Daily Sun called the trader being complained about, he denied any involvement in the said allegation.
