After an all-night vigil at his duty post, an officer serving with the Mobile Police Squadron 20, in Lagos, had an evil encounter with soldiers attending a church service near his home.
Inspector Daniel Amuro, who had reported his plight to the police authorities, told Daily Sun how he narrowly escaped death in the hands of the soldiers who were led by one Lieutenant H. Nwordi from the Ojo Cantonment.
Amuro was driving home at about 10.30 a.m when he saw a car blocking the road to his house. The car was parked outside the ECWA Church, Onireke branch. He said that he had shouted from his car asking for the person that blocked the road.
When he got no answer, he told two Boy Scouts members standing outside the church to help find the car owner. They called the man out from inside the church and he turned out to be a Lieutenant.
As the soldier appeared not ready to move the car quickly, Amuro threatened that he would deflate his tyres and the statement seemed to have touched a raw nerve in the lieutenant who went back into the church.
As if the army officer was a believer in the law of Moses, he came out of the church with rage rather than roses. And he was not alone. Amuro said 20 soldiers and the pastor had followed him.
Amuro said they dared him to carry out his threat, as they called him names. In anger, he left his car on the road and trekked to his house that was nearby.
But there was no escaping the wrath of the army officer, who allegedly led his men to Amuro's house and beat him to a pulp after forcing their way in.
Amuro said: "They broke into my house, destroyed my doors, household items, took my mobile phone and removed my wife's N125,000."
The police authorities in Lagos have ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack, after which they said an official complaint might be sent to the army authorities.
