Nigeria, Niger begin talks on border re-demarcation

The boundary commissions of Nigeria and its northern neighbor Niger have begun talks on re-demarcation of their common borders this week, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported Tuesday.

The boundary commissions of Nigeria and its northern neighbor Niger have begun talks on re-demarcation of their common borders this week, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported Tuesday.

Peter Ayodele, chairman of the Joint Bilateral Commission, was quoted as saying at the meeting equitable sharing of water resources and demarcation of border regions would be agreed upon, while ties between both countries would be strengthened.

Ayodele also said that the demarcation of border points had affected 125 communities, while 27 were complex cases.

"As a result, about 136 demarcation points will have to be re- demarcated with permanent structures," he said.

Mamman Koran, permanent secretary of the Boundary Commission in Niger, said communities that would be relocated would have the option of choosing which country to belong to.

Bukar Ibrahim, governor of the northeast Nigerian state of Yobe, the venue of the meeting, called on participants to renew the spirit of cooperation.

"After all, we have been brothers and political boundaries should not affect our relationship," he said.
