A mission university in the southwestern Nigerian sate of Ogun has announced a new set of codes, prohibiting students from using cell phones on campus.
Students at the Covenant University, founded in October 2002, were also not permitted to operate or park cars on campus, according to The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday.
"The university shall provide transportation, when necessary, to any location on or outside campus, as demanded by academic or sporting programs ... Phones facilities are provided for any student to make contact with parents, guardians, friends, etc. as at when needed," said a text on the university's website.
According to the university's Vice Chancellor Aize Obayan, the measures were necessary to achieve the mission of the institution, which is to produce "the total man."
It was through a proper development of students in form of a total inculcation of mental, intellectual, mortal and spiritual discipline that the objection of rolling out "princess and princesses" could be achieved, Obayan noted.
The newspaper did not tell the penalty for violating the codes, but said that the university had penalized 470 students either by way of expulsion or suspension since its inception three years ago.
