The Rivers State government has reiterated its preparedness to partner with well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies who seek to reduce youth restiveness and unemployment in the state. The state commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Mike Ejims-Onwukwe made this declaration on behalf of the executive governor of the state, Sir (Dr.) Peter Odili when he received a delegation of the Rivers State chapter of NEPAD Youth Network (NEYON) last Wednesday.

The commissioner explained that the state government is already implementing a number of laudable programmes to cater for the interest and welfare of youths in the state. Hon. Ejims-Onwukwe explained that the state government will continue to create the enabling environment for the private sector to grow through the provision of power, security and other infrastructures as a means of enhancing the socio-economic growth of the state.

According to the commissioner, the state government is leading other states in all the key areas such as gender sensitivity, healthcare delivery, power and agriculture as well as education towards meeting the United Nations 8-point millennium development goals.

He urged the leadership of the state chapter of NEYON to employ seriousness and transparency in its dealings as the state government would fully support the body on its agricultural and transport programmes designed to tackle youth unemployment and poverty in the state.

Earlier in his address, the Rivers State chapter co-ordinator of NEYON, Hon. Young Lot noted that the body is an umbrella organization for the wholesale of youth development that seeks not only to domesticate the NEPAD programme but also to partner with government and other corporate bodies to achieve the objectives of NEPAD in Nigeria.

He explained that the body is working on a transport scheme which when fully operational will gainfully employ a substantial number of youths in the state. He went on to describe NEPAD as a vision and commended both the federal and Rivers State government for packaging laudable programmes to address poverty and disease.
