LAGOS - MAFOLUKU area and its environs were yesterday thrown into confusion as men of the Air Force and Police engaged in a physical combat that lasted close to an hour.
Two Air Force men; a Wing Commander and a Squadron leader were reportedly injured by the policemen in the process.
Trouble according to an eye witness account started at about 10am when the two Air Force men who were on Course in Lagos were heading towards Oshodi. However on reaching Mafoluku bus-stop there was a hitch in traffic following a failed section of the road which was at the same time flooded, with some policemen controlling the traffic.
However when the Air Force men who were in mufty got to the flooded point, they reportedly tried to manoeuver their way to avoid the pot holes.
Reports said one of the senior policemen who stood close to the vehicle claimed the tyres climbed his foot and allegedly landed a slap on the face of the Wing Commander. Infuriated at the policeman's affront, the Wing Commander simply identified as Badmus, reportedly came out of his car and retaliated. This however led to free-for-all fight as other policemen at the spot allegedly bounced on the two Air Force men. Four other Air Force officers said to have been plying the route were said to have joined in the fight. Moments later, reports said a re-enforcement of Air Force men arrived the scene only to meet no policeman at the spot.
The incident was said to have intensified the traffic flow, as motorists were left stranded for over an hour.
When contacted, Police spokesman, Mr Olubode Ojajuni claimed ignorant of the incident. But on the Air Force part, they commended the effort of the Police Commissioner for his matured way of handling the issue and calling his men to order.
According to the Officer commanding PROVOST Squadron of the base services group, Wing Commander Stephen Gana " our men were heading for NITEL school at Oshodi for they were on course in Lagos when the incident occurred .They were both injured and are presently receiving treatment at the hospital. The issue has however been amicable resolved because immediately the Base Commander got wind of it, he contacted the Police Commissioner who thereafter invited the Police man in question and our men and apologies were tendered".
