FG May Introduce Camera Check for Exam Fraud

The Federal Government has considered introduction of mobile security cameras in examination halls to check examination malpractices in schools.

The Federal Government has considered introduction of mobile security cameras in examination halls to check examination malpractices in schools.

Also being considered is a dress code for higher institutions aimed at restoring morals of future leaders.

Minister of Education, Mrs. Chinwe Obaji gave the hint at the inauguration of a 23-member Committee on New Initiatives on Education Quality headed by Professor Grace Alele Williams.

The minister regretted that education had suffered decay in the last 15 years as confirmed in the draft report of the ongoing education sector analysis.

The decay she noted, had continued to negatively impact on content and delivery, infrastructure as well as end products at all levels.

"Ethics and morals are at their lowest ebb, giving rise to various anti-social vices including examination malpractices and cultism. The existing curricula at all levels of education no longer respond to the needs of the society.

'As a result, tertiary education graduates have become job seekers instead of job creators. Products of senior secondary school, who are unable to access tertiary education constitute a big menace to the society as they are neither adequately prepared with entrepreneurial nor strategic social skills. This taken together call for an urgent need to infuse discipline and quality into the education system at all levels."

Obaji said that although she was aware of various efforts to address the problems, her vision was "a call back to basics approach where the discipline, good morale, character, ethics etc which used to be the order of the day in our school system is reintroduced to mould and protect the character of our younger generations and those yet unborn."

And to attain the goals of the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) which included poverty reduction, wealth creation and acquisition of productive work skills, Obaji said her ministry would focus on infusion of discipline, improvement of the quality of education at all levels, periodic review and enhancement of the curriculum, encouragement of private-public partnerships promotion of information and communications technology capabilities at all levels and using education as a tool for skill acquisition, poverty reduction and job creation
