Tragedy hits the Nigeria Police as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Ondo State Command, Mr Ayo Owoeye, died yesterday in a multiple road accident along Akure Owo road alomng with his orderly, while the seriously injured driver is receiving medical attention at the state Specialist Hospital, Akure.
Owoeye met his death while returning from official assignment in Owo, in a head-on collision with another Mazda, driven by another police man.
Eyewitness told reporters that both vehicles were on top speed before the collision at a bend very close to permanent site of the Federal Road Safety Sector headquarters, along Ilesa Owo road.
Before rescue team could arrive, the Deputy commissioner and his orderly had given up the ghost, while the driver writhed in pains.
It took a combined team of men of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police to remove the corpses and deposited them at the mortuary of the state specialist hospital, Akure.
The service pistol of the orderly, according to the police authority, had been recovered, while investigation is on to determine the cause of the accident.
Confirming the incident, the Police Commissioner, Mr Nwachukwu Egbochukwu, described the accident as very unfortunate and shocking, saying Owoeye was a very competent officer who died in active service to his fatherland.
It would be recalled that it was the deceased police boss that led a crack team of policemen that unraveled the mystery of armed robbers terrorising the people of Ondo State, especially in Owo area.
The feat he achieved along with others, let to the killing of some bank robbers who robbed a Wema Bank Ado Ekiti last year, earned him his recent promotion as Deputy Commissioner.
