National Universities Commission (NUC) Committee on Monitoring of Private Universities (COMPU), after its annual evaluation of activities of private universities in Nigeria has given seven private universities visited last year its pass mark in meeting with the needed criteria.
Secretary of the Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola said in a statement that COMPU conducted its maiden visit to Madonna University, Okija, Benson Idahosa University, Benin City and Igbinedion University, Okada.
Babcock University, Ilishan - Remo; Bowen University, Iwo ; Convenant University, Ota and Pan-African University Lagos .
He said issues that concerned the delivery of quality university education were raised and brought to the attention of the authorities of the universities visited for remedy. "Being an annual event, the 2004 monitoring visit was aimed at evaluating the current level of development and ascertain compliance with issues raised during the maiden visits.
"All main programmes of the private universities have received either full or interim accreditiation by NUC and relevant professional bodies. They have conscientiously regulated their student population to match available human and material resources. They have maintained stable academic calandar and cult free campuses.
The institutions had come up in various ideas departing from the normsas can be seen in their innovative administrative styles which is believed would bring about a positive impact and change on students.
It was also discovered that the proprietors were in most cases directly involved with the day-to-day running of the universities.
"It was observed that all the universities had in one way or the other insisted on standards of discipline and attitudinal change. Some of the administrative policies and techniques included dress code, demerit chart, provision of conducive environment, and work-study programme as well as good relationship with industries. The committee noted that the universities visited had made heavy investment on large-scale infrasturucal development.
It was observed that the Proprietors/Chancellors were the sole financiers for the capital development of the universities. Fees charged were in most cases within reasonable range.
The committee noted that the private universities have all it would take to produce quality graduates that are disciplined, have the fear of God, posses leadership qualities and are job creators and not job seekers", he said.
