Shell said it was donating $3 million to disaster relief efforts in the region. Of this amount, $2 million will be donated locally, and distributed through our operating companies in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Malaysia to relief funds.

"We expect other local Shell schemes around the world to deliver a further $1m, such as the donation to relief funds of 5 cents for every litre of petrol and diesel sold in Singapore during the coming week.

The company said in addition to the domation, it would also ensure the continuing supply of essential fuels and products to the affected areas.

"In terms of disaster relief, our primary objective has been to focus on providing immediate local support on the ground to local communities through our Shell operations in affected countries. This includes the provision of fuel for rescue transport in Thailand, and the supply of water tanks in Sri Lanka.

ExxonMobil has pledged funds to assist relief efforts arising from the devastating earthquake and resulting tsunamis in South-east Asia with a contribution of $5 million.

The company said it will also match employee and retiree contributions from around the world.

"ExxonMobil is saddened by this terrible disaster, the full extent of which is still being assessed," said Lee Raymond, ExxonMobil's chairman and chief executive.

"ExxonMobil affiliates have donated in-kind assistance, including air transportation for medical personnel and provision of much-needed supplies, to relief efforts in affected countries," it said.

Also, India's Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has said that its employees have decided to donate a day's salary to aid victims of the tsunami that hit the southern coasts of India.

The donation from more than 38,000 employees of the company will amount to about 20 million rupees ($458,558).

ONGC has also rushed supplies, medical aid and company doctors to the affected sites.

The company has already distributed around seven thousand food packets in the Nagapattinam-Karaikal area and has decided to provide three meals every day for a week for the victims in Chennai.

It has also deployed two cranes for removing the debris from the road while a fire tender has also been mobilised to strengthen relief efforts.

Aid pledges for victims of the Asian earthquake and tsunami disaster topped $560 million as the official death toll climbed past 125,000 last weekend.

Meanwhile, UK independent Cairn Energy has declared its intention to make a donation to aid those affected by the disaster and has offered full support and assistance to authorities in Andra Pradesh, India and Bangladesh.
