LAGOS— NOBEL Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has called on Nigerians to consider electing a female President in 2007 as a solution to the scourge of mal-administration which has befallen the country for a long time.
He made the call in Lagos at the Pro- National Conference Organisations ( PRONACO) Women’s Forum which was held at the Magodo Estate Secretariat of the group yesterday.
Soyinka denounced Nigerians who have been advocating that the presidency of Nigeria should be allocated to any particular geo-political zone of the country, but rather advocated that power should be given to women since majority of them belong to the bottom of the social ladder in the country.
The Nobel Laureate further said that PRONACO is committed to building an egalitarian society where women would not be discriminated against.
In her own remarks at the occasion, Lagos State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Mrs Remi Adiukwu-Bakare, pledged that PRONACO would ensure that women get the 30 percent allocation in elective offices. which was endorsed by the United Nations Beijing Conference held in 1995.
