Yenagoa — Two persons, among them a serving Youth Corps member, were Sunday night shot dead by suspected cultists in Bayelsa State. Also a businesswoman was reportedly shot dead by persons suspected to be pirates in the riverine town of Kabeama in the Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.
The Amarata suburb of the state capital was Sunday night thrown into mourning when suspected cultists armed with dangerous weapons stormed the usually busy neighbourhood leaving in their trail the death of two persons; a barber and a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The tragic incident occurred between 7.30pm and 8:00pm at a salon behind the Bayelsa State office of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Witnesses told Vanguard that the suspected cultists, about four in number, went straight to the barbing salon where they opened fire on the proprietor said to be in his early twenties, a native of Amassoma, killing him instantly.
According to sources, the police on getting the information of the shooting in the neighbourhood swung into action by rushing to the scene with a view to apprehending the assailants. It was, however, gathered that a stray bullet ostensibly from the police said to be in hot pursuit of the fleeing cultists may have hit the Youth Corps member who was making a telephone call by the road side.
The Youth Corps member whose name was given as Mr. Akinduja Kolanle, was until his death serving in the riverine town of Egbema-Angalabiri in the Ekeremor Local Government Area of the state. Also, a businesswoman was reportedly shot dead last week in the riverine town of Kabeama in the Sagbama Local Government Area of the state by suspected pirates.
The deceased's name was given as Mrs. Grace Tekefe Okodi, a native of Ofoni in the Sagbama Local Government Area. The hoodlums who stormed the town through the Sagbama end of the creek were said to have gone and knocked on the door of the house of their victim at about 2:00am.
According to Vanguard source, the unsuspecting woman thinking they were customers who wanted to buy cigarettes opened her door only to face the gun wielding hoodlums. The hoodlums were said o have opened fire on her after which they made away with her 15 HP Yamaha outboard engine and an undisclosed amount of money.
Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Oborodudu (DSP) confirmed the two incidents. He said the corpses of the deceased persons have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
