Telecommunications services provider, Globacom, rewarded World Youth Championship silver medallists, the Flying Eagles, for their achievement at Holland 2005 with cash and material gifts on Tuesday.
Telecommunications services provider, Globacom, rewarded World Youth Championship silver medallists, the Flying Eagles, for their achievement at Holland 2005 with cash and material gifts on Tuesday.
At a reception held in honour of the team at Globacom's glittering edifice on Victoria Island, Lagos, the company's Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Muhammed Jameel, announced a cash award of N500,000 to each of the players, along with a state-of-the-art Nokia 6600 mobile phone set, a Glo SIM card and N120,000 worth of airtime for one year.
According to Jameel, the Glo line can be used virtually everywhere in the world, a good deal for some of the players who are based abroad.
'We've been made proud by the Flying Eagles and as a company where winning has become a way of life, we're doing this to motivate the boys to reach for greater heights. We want them to continue to play well, individually and as a team. We'll continue to be behind football like a solid rock," Jameel, who stood in for Globacom chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga, said.
The reception had in attendance coach Samson Siasia and 12 of the players that went to Holland, including goalkeepers Ambrose Vanzekin and Ige Kola, defenders Dele Adeleye, Kennedy Chinwo and Olubayo Adefemi.
Other players in attendance included Solomon Okoronkwo, Daddy Bazuaye and Chinedu Ogbuike.
Sports minister, Colonel Musa Mohammed, Nigeria Football Association chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, and Super Eagles caretaker coach, Austin Eguavoen were also in attendance..
Colonel Mohammed thanked Globacom for recognizing the excellent achievement of the squad and praised the boys and their handlers for making the country proud.
'Sport is the country's image maker and our success in Holland has once again reminded the world that this is a country filled with positive things. Nigeria's image was at its best when we were in Holland.
'The players have proved that they can rise to the occasion and we need to inject some of their young blood to the Super Eagles."
The minister also used the occasion to confirm the appointment of Siasia and Daniel Amokachi as assistants to Eguavoen.
