Despite the Flying Eagles' failure to lift the World Youth Championship trophy due to unprofessional officiating by the Norwegian referees who officiated at the final match of Netherlands 2005 between Nigeria and Argentina, the team and its coach should be maintained and fully rewarded.
Despite the Flying Eagles' failure to lift the World Youth Championship trophy due to unprofessional officiating by the Norwegian referees who officiated at the final match of Netherlands 2005 between Nigeria and Argentina, the team and its coach should be maintained and fully rewarded.
This is because they did the nation proud and have also portrayed a good image of the country.
I believe that the promising team will fly in lifting subsequent trophies.
However, I implore the Nigeria Football Association, NFA, to maintain the present squad of Flying Eagles, especially those players like John Mikel Obi, Taiye Taiwo, Monday James, Kennedy Onyeka Apam, Adebayo Adedeji, Bayo Olufemi and other members of the team.
These players must be encouraged and kept in close contact with one another so that they will make the country proud again in subsequent competitions.
This can be achieved by ensuring that their entitlements are paid regularly and friendly matches are organised for the Flying Eagles to further strengthen the team's cohesion. Also, politics must not be allowed to consume this prestigious team, as has always been the case each time a team attains global status.
The coach of the team, Samson Siasia, must be duly rewarded and encouraged for the professional and successful handling of the team.
If these can be done, the team will, no doubt, soon become the best in the world of football.
