Group Demands Additional Ministerial Slots for Abia


Following the nomination of 12 ministerial nominees by President Olusegun Obasanjo and their clearance by the Senate, the President has been urged to nominate more ministerial nominees from the state in order to balance the quota system used in nominating the nominees.

Following the nomination of 12 ministerial nominees by President Olusegun Obasanjo and their clearance by the Senate, the President has been urged to nominate more ministerial nominees from the state in order to balance the quota system used in nominating the nominees.

Chairman of the Abuja-based Abia Social Organisation (ASO), Chief Kenneth Chiemerem Okoro, who made the appeal, said it was important to make the call now since the President is yet to swear-in new ministers and assign new portfolio's to them.

Okoro also stated that "with the new political equation and couple with the principle of the Federal Character which Mr. President has maintained since coming into office, federal cabinet.

He added that " we decided to make this appeal because Mr. President has the right to use the power conferred on him to consider names of more ministerial nominees" adding that presently, states like Osun, Kwara and Delta have two Ministers in the Federal Executive Council.

He added however, that with the recent clearance given by the Senate to he 12 ministerial nominees, the implication is that Anambra and Bayelsa States have joined the states that would end up having two ministers each.
