One Nigerian boxer for world boxing championships in Moscow

Only one Nigerian boxer is in the African contingent to this year's World Boxing Championships opening on Saturday in Moscow, according to Secretary of the Nigeria Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) Caleb Gidado.

Only one Nigerian boxer is in the African contingent to this year's World Boxing Championships opening on Saturday in Moscow, according to Secretary of the Nigeria Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) Caleb Gidado.

Gidado, who will accompany Adura Olanlehin to Moscow, told reporters Thursday before leaving for Tunisia where the African team was camped that Samson Aransiola would be at the boxer's corner as coach.

The secretary said both Olanlehin, a light heavyweight, and his coach left for Tunis on July 5.

Gidado disclosed that the boxer, who was the only Nigerian silver medalist at the African championships held earlier in Morocco, was reinstated in the team after the continental body rescinded its earlier decision to take only gold medal winners to the world tournament in Moscow.

"The initial arrangement was that it was only the gold medalists at the championships in Casablanca, Morocco, who would go to Moscow but later decided that all silver medal winners would also take part in the world championships," Gidado said.

"We went with eight boxers to the African championships and it was only Olanlehin who won silver while three others won bronze medals," he added.
