A 500-megawatt power plant is to be built in Cross River State by the federal government as part of efforts to boost power supply in the country.

Cross River State Governor Donald Duke told journalists yesterday that the state government was not in position and did not have the competence to go into construction of a power plant, hence the 500 megawatt plant by the Federal Government was a welcome development.

The governor did not give details on the electricity project, but said that due to the nature of the project, it would be located in the state and it would take off soon.

According to him, the state has 67 electricity projects to be commissioned in the next one month.

On the dualisation of he Ndidem Usang Iso Road, the governor said he was not satisfied with the pace of work by the contractors, saying "by now much the job should have been done".

He however suppressed optimism that by December, Point 06 on the road from Mary Slessor Roundabout to Parliamentary Road would be ready. The second section, which is Point 6-12 from the Parliamentary Road to the highway by the River Basin would be completed later.

"It is a critical road, we need to decentralize to take care of heavy traffic" off the Murtala Mohammed Way," he said.
