JOMALIC will sanitize maritime industry ~ LongJohn


The Honourable member representing Bonny/Degema Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Tamunotonye O. LongJohn has declared that the Joint Maritime Labour Industrial Council (JOMALIC) will sanitize the maritime industry.

Hon. LongJohn made this declaration while commissioning JOMALIC office in Bonny last Wednesday.

At the occasion, which witnessed the official cutting of tape to the office, the federal lawmaker expressed happiness for being part of the formulation of uniform maritime activities in the country, pointing out that JOMALIC is an initiative aimed at bringing development to the maritime industry.

Hon. LongJohn, who also was the Special Guest of Honour to the occasion maintained that with the new maritime law put in place, it will be easy to monitor activities in the sector. He pointed out that the new arrangement will ensure a realistic compromise between the various interacting bodies in the industry as well as called on the sea workers operating in Bonny to work co-operatively. According to him, "JOMALIC has come to be the sole body responsible for maritime activities in the country and endorsed by the law. It is not out of place that the federal government decided to open the Bonny office but to ease activities".

Earlier in his speech, the former Commissioner for Finance in the state and the chairman of the occasion, Warisenibo I. T. Williams praised Obasanjo's administration for evolving developmental strategies for the maritime sector.
He expressed satisfaction with the on-going reform in the industry especially in the establishment of the Bonny office, which he said will make the area self-sustaining. He urged the executive of JOMALIC in Bonny to always strive towards cordial relationship with the various bodies in the sector for industrial harmony.

In his speech, the National Chairman of JOMALIC, Alhaji Tijani Rahmalan, represented by Dr. Nathaniel said that the formation of JOMALIC was federal government's way of giving dignity to the industry.

He said that JOMALIC, among other things was responsible for the professionalisation of the sea workers job, registration of members as well as regulating members' conduct.

Dr. Nathaniel warned that the council would inaugurate a crack team of task force to monitor the activities of maritime workers with the aim of ridding the body of mediocre. He enjoined members to respect the job so as to bring dignity to its and called upon the council executive in Bonny to ensure a collaborative effort with the Bonny Employment Bureau for the interest of all in the area.
