Enugu - The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, records some 70 new cases of HIV weekly, says Mrs Appolonia Obi, a Senior Nursing Officer at the hospital.
Obi was speaking as part of an HIV awareness campaign organised jointly by the UNDP and various NGOs at Ozalla in the Nkanu Central council area of Enugu State.
She noted that the 800 monthly quota of anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs allocated to the hospital was far below the demand of people living with HIV and AIDS.
Obi, therefore, stressed 'the need for everybody to embrace all preventive measures to sustain a negative status".
Nonetheless, the UNTH 'is still making representations to the Federal Government to increase the quota," the nursing officer said.
The hospital, she said, recorded about 74 new cases of HIV weekly, noting that 'there is not enough ARV for all of them, but UNTH is still making efforts for an increase in the quota."
Highlighting the key role of prevention, especially within the 15-49 sexually active age bracket, Obi said mother-to-child transmission of the virus was a matter of growing concern.
