ONITSHA - CURRENCY dealers in Onitsha, the commercial centre of Anambra State have denied trading in Biafran currency, saying they did not recognise it as a legal tender. The currency dealers therefore urged security operatives to arrest and prosecute anybody who trades on Biafran currency. The group said those trading on the illegal currency and parading as their members are actually not their members.
The money traders, under the name ' Eziokwu Bu Ndu", reacted to a newspaper report last week that their members were trading on Biafran currency. The report triggered off an investigation in the market by State Security Services operatives (SSS). The investigation prompted the leadership of the traders to be invited by the State Director of SSS, who confronted them with the report, which they promptly denied.
The State Director of SSS, Alhaji Ibrahim Audu confirmed the meeting, pointing out that his men are on the trail of those trading on the illegal currency.
To clear their name from the report, the traders issued a statement denying any involvement in the Biafran currency deal.
'Anybody found trading in the so-called Biafran currency is doing so at his or her own risk. We hereby advise the law enforcement agents to leave our members to carry out their legitimate business and take measures to arrest those involved in this act". The statement was signed by Chief Romanus Anasonye and Mr. Louis Ipere, the association's chairman and secretary, respectively.
