The commander of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) inAkwa Ibom Mrs. F. D. Archibong has vowed that her organization will not give up until it has ridden the state of illicit drugs and drug trafficking.
The commander of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) inAkwa Ibom Mrs. F. D. Archibong has vowed that her organization will not give up until it has ridden the state of illicit drugs and drug trafficking.
Mrs Archibong who was speaking in Uyo remarked that June 26 of every year is set aside by the United Nations for global deliberations on the illicit drug menace that has threatened the foundation of so many homes and society.
"The world today", she observed while assessing global reactions, " has told the United Nations to renew its campaign against this ugly, hydra-headed "monster" called drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking."
She note that it is proper to sensitize the public on the dangers of drug abuse and drug related problems
And to "enlist the support of individuals, corporate bodies, non governmental organisations and faith based organizations in the drive to create awareness on the effects of unhealthy choices by our youth /young adults who might be involving in risky sexual behaviour, cultism, violent crime and other anti social activities."
According to her the strength of any nation is guaranteed by healthy vibrant youths.
"Well brought up youth are assets to themselves, their immediate environment and the nation at large", she stressed.
Meanwhile, the scope of the narcotic problems today has only begun to be realized.
She also said that the relationship between drug abuse, risky sexual behaviours and HIV/AIDS are so obvious.
She urged " major stakeholders should campaign against illicit drug abuse and drug trafficking", insisting that " a well planned programme on drugs and sex education" that is infused " as part of the comprehensive health education programme at various level of our school system" would be welcome.
Speaking in the same vein, the Commissioner of Health Dr. Edet Attih congratulated the organizers for initiating the programme.
The commissioner directed them to continue to use available channels to educate the masses about drugs in society.
The commissioner further said that students should stop the use of drugs in the school, because it leads them to cultism which is a very bad development between them and their parent relative etc.
He warned the students that government will not welcome or be part of that development but to make sure that their future has come to pass.
He concluded by thanked the governor for the development of the state and continued to seen peace and stabilities in the state, that God should continue to give him more knowledge for his people.
