Thursday 16 June was indeed a sad day for students of Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo, as a trailer that was trying to avoid a police bullion van ran into two students, a male and female, killing the male instantly. The female student from Lagos State University was rushed to the Ayinke Hospital at Ikeja, after receiving first aid treatment at the Lagos State Polytechnic Clinic, Isolo.
According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased who was identified as Olajide Sunny, a student of Business Studies died on the spot and his corpse was deposited at the Isolo mortuary.
Akintoye Oluwatosin, a student of Mass Communication who saw it all recounted the incident.
'A bullion van was chasing a vehicle and in an attempt by the driver to avoid the police, he swerved and ran into the two students who were standing in front of the school gate".
She said the female whose name was not known, as at press time, is a student of Lagos State University, was on a visit to LASPOTECH to see a friend, she was rescued in-between two trailers parked beside the school. She was soaked in her own blood.
Another eyewitness, Popoola Yaya Adewale, an Accountancy Student of Laspotech in NDII said the driver of the trailer was avoiding the police bullion van, which was probably conveying money to a bank.
Adebayo Olurin, speaker of the Student Union Government of LASPOTECH and director, action and mobilization of NANS, described Olajide's death as a sad one. He said the SUG demands adequate compensation from the state government to the family of the deceased for failing to control traffic. He also called on the authorities of the Nigerian police to call their men to order to avoid face-off between them and the students.
'The police should have a democratic culture rather than the militarized culture. Through their unguided behaviour, several lives have been lost. So, we are asking the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State to call his men to order".
It was learnt that the driver of the vehicle took to his heels to avoid attack from the grief-stricken students. The school had to be shut down immediately for security reasons but has since been re-opened.
