BENIN CITY - OPERATIVES of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrived Benin City yesterday to commence investigation on a petition sent to it by the 2001 Kerosene Explosion Victims alleging that the State Government diverted the N15.7 million donations made out to them by individuals and corporate bodies without regard to their state of health.
Also yesterday, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) ordered members of the aggrieved 2001 Kerosene Explosion Victims Association led by a Non-Governmental Organisation, Life Tag, to present before it facts on the petition written to it on the alleged diversion of donations made to them by individuals and organisations.
Vanguard gathered that the visits of the EFCC officials to Benin City around noon on Monday caused a stir at the Igun headquarters of the Kerosene Victims Association (KEVA) as many of the victims were seeen jubiliating that their petition thought forgotten was being investigated by the Commission.
One of the officials of the commission, Vanguard gathered, told the victims that the visit was part of their preliminary investigation into the issues raised in the petition and one embarked upon to familarise themselves with the individuals and government agents mentioned in the petition submitted last year by the victims.
One of the victims, Mr Paul Oghene told Vanguard at the Igun secretariat that the visit of the EFCC has given them more hope that the issue of mismanagement of their donations would be looked into.
