Soccer: Nigeria ride titanic penalty struggle past Holland


It took 120 minutes of play and 24 penalty kicks to separate the Netherlands and Nigeria in the quarter- final of the World Youth Championship, and after finishing the match 1-1 the hosts finally succumbed to a dramatic Taye Taiwo spot kick as the Africans advanced to the last four 10-9 on penalties.

Kerkrade, Netherlands - It took 120 minutes of play and 24 penalty kicks to separate the Netherlands and Nigeria in the quarter- final of the World Youth Championship, and after finishing the match 1-1 the hosts finally succumbed to a dramatic Taye Taiwo spot kick as the Africans advanced to the last four 10-9 on penalties.

The two players who started the shootout came up again to take their second chances, with Collins John\'s attempt saved by Ambruse Vanzekin and Taiwo converting - much to the misery of the \'Oranje\' fans in Kerkrade.

In the semi-final match on Tuesday, the Eagles will face another African side, Morocco, who advanced on penalties at the expense of Italy in the quarter-finals.

John Owoeri scored in the first minute of the match for the Nigerians, while Ron Vlaar responded in the first minute of the next half to equalise.

The match was the third quarter-final of three played so far to go to extra time after being even at the end of 90 minutes.
