Tragedy struck recently in Tungar Fulani village of Bakura Local Government Area in Zamfara State when 15 persons reportedly died after a meal of beans.
The village shares boundaries with Bakura, the homestead of the Governor Sani Ahmed.
Saturday Independent gathered during the week that all the victims consumed the beans suspected to have been sprayed with insecticide.
The unsuspecting victims bought the foodstuff from a nearby market without knowing that it had been sprayed with insecticide to prevent decay, quickly cooked it and after consumption, experienced stomach upset.
They were rushed to a clinic in the area but it was too late. Autopsy reports on the victims confirmed that they died of poisoned beans.
However, the Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Bello Dankande Ganiji, while confirming the incident, said only two persons died while the rest were recuperating from an undisclosed hospital.
He said the village head in the area first raised alarm over the influx of ‘poisoned' beans in markets but before necessary steps could be taken to avert danger, the victims had eaten the beans.
According to the Chairman, farmers in the area should be blamed for the calamity because they preferred to hoard their produce for higher economic gains and in the process, spray the produce with insecticide for preservation.
He said those recuperating from the hospital were in stable condition and appealed to farmers in the area to have the fear of God.
