Two brothers, who were looking for some missing money, have given their sister-in-law a taste of hell.
Mike and Onyebuchi Nwankwo were accused of pouring petrol on Ifeoma Nwankwo, after she was struck with machete, on suspicion that she stole Mike's 7,300 Euro currency that had mysteriously vanished from the flat. On the fateful night, they came home with three cutlasses. One was an old cutlass, the other two were newly bought. They also contracted their friend Nnanan, to assist in the deed.
Ifeoma, who was still recuperating in hospital, told Daily Sun in a telephone chat, "I was in the bedroom that night. I was naked and about to go and take my bath, when Mike charged into the room with a cutlass. He started cutting me. I shouted and screamed, thinking my husband and his elder brother, who were in the sitting room would come to save me. I didn't know they were held hostage by Nnanan and Onyebuchi. He poured fuel on me. He was going to set me on fire. I don't know how God managed to take him away and I escaped."
Ifeoma escaped by jumping from the balcony, because the three men had locked the door leading to the stairs. Ifeoma's elder brother, Chukwuma Ezeofor, said his blood ran cold when his brother-in-law, Uche Nwankwo narrated the incident to him. He became furious when he met his kid sister in a pool of her own blood. He said: " They cut her on the head and legs. They poured fuel on her. She escaped when he went to get a box of matches to set her ablaze."
Bernard Nwankwo, who told Daily Sun that he was the eldest of the Nwankwo brothers in Lagos, said he was a witness.
According to him, he was called to settle the dispute among the three brothers but noticed that Mike and Onyebuchi who had walked into the room with their friend Nnanan were not interested. He said: "They were moving aimlessly in the room. I didn't know they had such a plan. They locked the door leading to the stairs. And started carrying out their plans. Mike went into the room after Ifeoma. Onyebuchi held Uche, while Nnanan held me. He beat me too much. He kicked me ruthlessly, ordered me to lie on the floor and flogged me with the cutlass. The slight chance I had, I jumped over the balcony. I spent five days in hospital."
Mike, a returnee from Germany, said he just came back to finish his uncompleted building with the money which was stolen. He explained that his anger with Ifeoma was that she sang, danced and clapped, while everyone else was sad because of the missing money. Mike felt Ifeoma was mocking him. He said: "That very night, the singing was too much. I went after her into the bedroom. I asked her why she was so happy. She said I should get out. I slapped her."
Mike claimed Ifeoma ran into the kitchen and picked a cutlass, which he had forcefully collected from her. He said he only gave a cut on the leg with the machete. "She ran to the balcony and jumped, that was the last I saw of her. I meant her no harm. I am sorry for what happened. I reacted in anger."
Onyebuchi admitted to have forcefully stopped his eldest brother, Uche, from responding to his wife's cries for help, but claimed they didn't plan to kill Ifeoma.
According to him, if they had wanted to kill anyone, they would have done so through a Baba they visited about the missing money. He said: "The Baba said the money would be found and returned but the person that stole it would die. Mike refused, saying he did not want to shed blood."
