Secondary Schools Begin Massive Campaign Against HIV/AIDS


Secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja at the 2004 World AIDS Day Youth Campaign embarked on massive campaign against HIV/AIDS through poetry, music, drama, art exhibition/competition, eassy reading etc.

The event which saw about 10 secondary schools participating afforded the youth the opportunity to express their feelings about the dreaded disease and the best way they can stay alive using the various medium of art at the occasion.

Mrs. Asaba Ahmed, the Trustee of AIDS Unites for Life who organised the event in conjunction with Media AIDS Project said introducing HIV/AIDS education particularly in secondary schools was the only way of protecting the vunerable group (12-18) before they venture into the tertiary institutions.
She said the significance of the event was to bring together the youth and show them the importance of staying alive and the fact that it was entirely their choice to make.

She disclosed that they were made to up come with solutions using arts of different medium. "The youth in the secondary school are still very young and are impressionable and if the dangers of the various choices they make are not made known to them right now, the future of our youth would be in great danger," she said.

The NGO started with 12 secondardy schools in two state (Lagos and Abuja) and one of the major aim of the organisation is to get youths to be interested in the HIV/AIDS issue using arts to express their perception of AIDS.
