LAGOS lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), has asked for a thorough investigation into the Ago-Iwoye crisis in which many students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University were allegedly killed by natives of the town.

Chief Fawehinmi, who spoke with newsmen in Abeokuta, said that only a thorough investigation by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, personally could unearth what actually happened, saying Governor Olugbenga Daniel would not be able to conduct a proper investigation into the crisis.
'Let a thorough investigation be conducted and I don't believe that Otunba Gbenga Daniel can conduct proper investigation in this matter because of his interest in the Ebumawe.
'What I suggest is that Ehindero is a lawyer and he is trying to get himself confirmed as the Inspector General of Police, he must prove his mettle, he must conduct proper investigation himself.
'It is his duty to detect the crimes that were committed. Whoever is guilty, even if it is the Ebumawe the Oba, he should be brought to book. Nobody is above the law," he said.
Chief Fawehinmi, who was in Abeokuta in respect of the Alake of Egbaland chieftaincy suit, lamented that it was unfortunate that the students killed were children of the poor, adding that the government, police, SSS and the Directorate of Military Intelligence, DMI, cannot guarantee the safety of the people.
He said: 'The DMI has so pre-occupied itself with the protection of the absentee president who has stepped out of the country for 528 days. He (President Obasanjo) does not concern himself with the plight of the Nigerian people as long as he is well guarded. He is not bothered.
'Extra judicial killing is an everyday occurrence. Police arrest people and bring them out at 2 a.m and shoot them in the leg and kill them. So, the state of security in Nigeria is frightening. See what happened at Ago-Iwoye, there was no basis for it. People were killed, waylaid in the bush and killed like rats and yet no serious arrest.
'Yes, we know it is not right to burn Oba's palace but provocation led to it."
