Police Cadets On Hunger Strike

Police cadet officers at Wudil Police Academy yesterday went on hunger strike in their bid to make the school authority reverse its alleged planned decision of deducting N 9,000 feeding fee from their monthly allowances as against N5,400.

Police cadet officers at Wudil Police Academy yesterday went on hunger strike in their bid to make the school authority reverse its alleged planned decision of deducting N 9,000 feeding fee from their monthly allowances as against N5,400.

THISDAY gathered that the officers, who are currently undergoing training in the institution refused to take their break fast and they also abstained from taking their lunch in protest of the hike.

The action of the trainees had prompted the authority to put them in solitary confinement, as each one of them was ordered to report himself or her self to one of their trainers, while no cadet officer would be allowed to go out of the school premises.

A source told THISDAY that if the authority is allowed to go ahead with the decision, the trainees would be left with only N5,400 out of the N14,500 monthly allowance.

However, the commandant of the academy, Assistant Inspector General of police (AIG), Njangar Egbe Njan told newsmen that he was not aware of any hunger strike but admitted that there were some problems in the school.

He said there was no plan to hike the feeding fee, nothing that the college has been facing acute water shortage as well as epileptic power supply.
'The condition in the academy is not ideal but we are working hard to address them," he said.
