Daredevil armed robbers struck twice over the weekend in Warri, raiding a church and its priests as well as the College of Education, Warri.

Daredevil armed robbers struck twice over the weekend in Warri, raiding a church and its priests as well as the College of Education, Warri.

In both incidents, the robbers had a field day as they carted away large sums of money and other valuables, leaving on their trail tears, sorrow and blood.

THISDAY checks revealed that the gang numbering about fourteen, stormed the premises of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Edjeba, Warri at about 1.30am on Monday and held to ransom, the two priests resident at the par personal belongings of the priests.

Also activities were halted following another robbery at the College of Education, Warri.

The gang said to be made up of over forty heavily armed robbers first captured three policemen and twelve security - men on guard duty at the expansive school premises before settling down to the business of burglary.

A visit to the institution revealed that the armed robbers broke into virtually every available office, carting away computers, television sets and air-conditioners. Most of the offices broken into were for the lecturers. The drawers and shelves in the burgled office were ransacked and their contents strewn all over the place. Curiously however, the bursary department, regarded as the treasury of the institution was spared.

But while a squad of the armed robbery gang went in search of money and valuables in the offices, another group was busy torturing the captured security guards and three policemen. A female student who reportedly stayed back in school that night to study against an examination the following day was brutally raped while the guards sustained deep matched cuts on their heads. All the victims are now lying critically ill at the Central Hospital, Warri.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has vowed to give armed robbers operating in the State a good run for their money. Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Udom Ekpoudom who was in Warri on a familiarization tour said the command would combat crime like it never did before.

He however sought the co-operation of members of the public in providing useful information that could help the police to track down criminals.
