OWERRI - ARRANGEMENTS have reached advanced stages for the formation of a youth organization to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS in Onuimo local government area of Imo State.
The Orientation Officer in charge of the local council area, Mr. Godwin Ikechukwu Okpara, who disclosed this to Vanguard in Owerri, also said that the battle against aids is equally part of the re-orientation programme of the state government."We are beginning with the youths in this local council area. They are among the most sexually active and except they are properly informed about the deadly scourge, they sadly fall victims of the killer syndrome", Okpara reasoned.
Explaining further why his office decided to float the group, the Orientation Officer insisted that if they are not infected, they would be affected in one way or the other."The effects of the pandemic includes the devastation of our able-bodied young men and women, serious depletion of national productivity and the endangering of material, intellectual, economic and spiritual well-being of the people", he said.
Okpara expressed regret that the debilitating effects of HIV/AIDS have traumatized both the infected persons and their loved ones, stressing that except the youths are galvanized to fight the scourge now, tomorrow might be very bleak for the country.
Imo State Orientation Agency (ISOA) is developing on a programme to create the required awareness, eliminate the spread of HIV/AIDS and reduce its impact in communities in the local government area", He concluded.
