Chukwu may quit before NFA axe

Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu may step down in the next couple of days as the NFA prepares to carry out a major reshuffle in the team's coaching and playing personnel with no less than four players from the Flying Eagles squad currently in Holland to be drafted into the senior side.

Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu may step down in the next couple of days as the NFA prepares to carry out a major reshuffle in the team's coaching and playing personnel with no less than four players from the Flying Eagles squad currently in Holland to be drafted into the senior side.

Nigeria laboured to a 1-1 draw with Angola on Saturday in Kano, a result which left Nigeria's World Cup hopes hanging in the balance and top NFA sources informed KICK OFF that Chukwu has been weighing his options and may likely step down before Tuesday.

'Chukwu has been looking at the different options available to him, and he will certainly take a decision between now and Tuesday," KICK OFF was informed.

The NFA board is expected to meet in Abuja during the FA Cup draws on Tuesday and are expected to take a ‘major decision' on the Super Eagles coaching staff but both parties are looking at the terms of the new contract signed by the coach early this year and what the implications may be in terms of resignation or sack.

Chukwu will be due for a huge financial compensation if he were to be sacked by the board, and it is a situation the cash-strapped NFA do not want to be in. At the same time, it appears that were Chukwu to walk away, he may also be liable to pay some sort of compensation, or forfeit the monies owed him.

A compromise, which would see both parties agreeing a parting of ways by mutual consent looks to be on the cards at the moment. Assistant coach Austin Eguavoen is likely to step into the breach while a tested local coach will be contracted to assist the ex-Super Eagles skipper.

The re-organisation will not only stop at the coaching level, as the playing personnel are also expected to see some overhaul, with no less than four players from the Flying Eagles expected to be drafted into the Super Eagles for the remaining World Cup qualifiers.

Wonder kid John Mikel Obi, left back Taye Taiwo, forward Isaac Promise and midfielder Sani Keita have all impressed in Siasia's squad and are likely to be called in to freshen up the senior team as soon as they are done with the World Youth Championship.
