Ekiti State's bloodshed

As indigenes of Ekiti State, we have observed with shock the unfolding events in the state, particularly over the issue of political rally and councillorship election.

As indigenes of Ekiti State, we have observed with shock the unfolding events in the state, particularly over the issue of political rally and councillorship election.

Obviously, the incumbent governor is much interested in the 2007 elections, but it is disheartening that police authorities in the state are taking sides in a purely political affair.

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, might need to investigate this allegation.

While the state House of Assembly might investigate the problem that attended the celebration of the last Democracy Day in the state, during which some people were shot to death, we demand that issues that have generated public interest such as this should not be treated with official secrecy.

We also urge the Federal Government to take a concrete stand on the issue, especially as the security of ordinary citizens of the state.

If the political melodrama in Anambra, Kogi, and Plateau states could enjoy Federal Government's intervention, we don't see any reason why Ekiti State should be left to itself at this trying period.

We urge the Federal Government not to be biased in bringing the culprits of Saturday May 28th mayhem in the state to book.

Also, the bloodshed cannot be the reason why the state government should ban political rallies in the state. After all, we are in a democratic government.
