NAIJA Pop star D'banj will launch his debut album No Long Ting today at the Fiesta Bar & Restaurant, 8 &9 Embassy Court, Welling, UK.
The 12-track album features hits like Tongolo, Mobolowowon, All The Way and Ika O Da. The album which was produced by ex-Solek Crew member, Don Jazzy -- according to UK-based Nigerian popular music entertainer, Tijani Abass aka DJ Abass -- had its Nigeria launch two months ago and has since remained the 'number one' album on most charts in the country.
The UK launch party will feature side attractions from Mr Solek, Dj Abass, Chi Chi of Africa and a host of other UK-based acts.
DJ Abass also informed that the Intro Summer Jam 2005, will hold next Saturday from 9pm - 5am (though performance starts 11pm), featuring Sunny Neji, Ruggedman, D'Banj, X2 and Dj Abass, at the N-TYCE, 38 Wellington Street, Woolwich, London.
DJ Abass (Abass Abayomi Tijani) was born in London and returned to his native Nigeria in the 70's where he did his primary, secondary and university education. A graduate of political science and a trained journalist, his passion for music and disc jockeying started in his secondary school days where he played at most student organised social functions. He was campus deejay during his university days where he helped form a dance/entertainment group Le Griffe and organised a lot of campus social events from parties to pageants.
On completion of his degree programme, DJ Abass worked as an entertainment and political writer with The Guardian. This period of his life set the pace for his career as a disc jockey, promoter and television presenter. His stint with The Guardian brought him in close contact with top 'deejays', promoters and media personalities in Nigeria.
He returned to London in the 90s where disc jockeying became a full time vocation. He started out playing in little venues and private functions and then moved into the club scene. He gradually moved into promotions and has organised some memorable events on black entertainment scene in the UK in the last decade. His company DJA MUSIC operates as a showbiz consultancy firm that caters for all facets of entertainment from artiste management, nightclub management, disc jockey training, media networking and events planning.
In 2003, DJ Abass was credited as the first African to present a music program on British television with the introduction of INTRO. Intro is a music program that showcases up and coming/established African musicians and presents them to the world. Intro goes out live and interactive every Wednesday night from 8-10pm on Ben Tv, SKY Digital 184. Past guests on the show include Rhian Benson, Jimi Solanke, Tony Allen, Lady Saw, Ninja Man, Xplastaz, Charly Boy, King Masco, Lagbaja, Tony Tetuila, Solek Crew, Trybesmen, JJC & 419 Squad, Freddie Funkstone and King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal 1 to name a few.
A master of 'the mix', Dj Abass is renowned for his nightclub mix sessions on CD which air on radio stations in the UK and in Nigeria. He plays music across a wide range of genres from contemporary R'n'B, hip-hop, soul, soca, calypso, ragga, to jazz, fusion and all forms of African music.
