Nekede poly suspends 32 students for exam malpractices

MANAGEMENT of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, has summarily suspended students for their alleged involvement in varying forms of examination malpractice.

OWERRI - MANAGEMENT of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, has summarily suspended students for their alleged involvement in varying forms of examination malpractice. Disclosing this to Vanguard in Owerri, the institution's Rector, Chief Onyekwere I. Nwankwo, an engineer, said the suspended students were caught in the examination fraud during the first semester testsfor the 2004/2005 academic session.

"The institution's rule makes it very clear that any student, who cheats during any examination conducted by the Polytechnic, faces summary dismissal. For now, the 32 students have only been suspended until they are given ample opportunity to defend themselves before a panel set by the institution", Nwankwo said.

According to the Rector, the students were alleged to have committed offences which ranged from impersonation, physical assault on invigilators and smuggling of unauthorized materials into the examination halls. "The affected students were said to have either impersonated, physically assaulted officially assigned invigilators or brazenly smuggled unauthorized materials into the examination halls. These are some of the sordid acts which this institution cannot afford to condone", he explained.

Although he argued that students know the repercussions of getting involved in examination malpractice, cultism, arson, rape and all other anti-social behaviours, he however disclosed that the 32 students would still be given fair hearing .

report to the institution's Examination Misconduct Committee for immediate and proper investigation."Their cases have been forwarded to the Polytechnic's Examination Misconduct Committee for immediate and proper investigation. I must also add that their findings and recommendations will determine the Polytechnic's next line of action", the Rector explained.
