The Police in Lagos yesterday averted what would have looked like a bloody clash between students of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) Isolo campus and the police over an alleged killing of one of the students by a policeman on Thursday evening.
The Police in Lagos yesterday averted what would have looked like a bloody clash between students of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) Isolo campus and the police over an alleged killing of one of the students by a policeman on Thursday evening.
The students who took to the Oshodi/Apapa expressway Thursday evening when the news of the incident filtered in, allegedly burnt over three vehicles including the truck that crushed one of them to death. They were also said to be heading to the police station close-by when they were halted by some policemen.
Not satisfied with the damage done on Thursday, the students yesterday morning, reportedly held a crucial meeting where they concluded to mobilse other students at the Ikorodu campus to avenge the death of one of their own.
However, as early as 7am yesterday morning, police vans were stationed around the campus to stall any likely rampage, while another team of policemen led by the Deputy-Commissioner of Police in-charge of operation, Mr John Haruna briefed the students on the true position of things and asked for calm.
Investigation into the matter according to Haruna, revealed that the driver of the truck that killed the victim was not a policeman. He also clarified that the person crushed by the truck was also not a student. An enquiry team by some of the students was said to have also confirmed police claims.
Commercial and vehicular activities at the popular Isolo bridge which were disrupted Thursday, however returned to normal after the departure of the policemen yesterday.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police spokesman, Mr Olubode Ojajuni said, " we had to move fast in order to avert any likely disturbance of public peace and also to hint the students of the fact that the truck involved was not a police truck neither was the driver of the truck a policeman. It was also discovered that the deceased was not also a student of the institution. Calm has returned to the area".
