Council secretary reacts to robbery claim

The secretary of Tai local government council in Rivers State, Hon. Sunday Akpene has broken his silence few days after a media report linked him with an alleged robbery incident at Kira, his home town in the same LGA.

...Says it is political and totally false

The secretary of Tai local government council in Rivers State, Hon. Sunday Akpene has broken his silence few days after a media report linked him with an alleged robbery incident at Kira, his home town in the same LGA.

He said the allegation was nothing more than a product of political machination, aimed at rubbishing his clean and fast growing individual image by those he described as "self defeatists".

Addressing journalists in his office at Saakpenwa, headquarters of the local government council early this week, Hon. Akpene denied neither ever conceiving the idea nor physically participating directly or indirectly in any vicious activity against anybody, including the one under reference.

He described the allegation, which appeared in a weekly newspaper (not The Port Harcourt Telegraph) in its May 23-29 edition under the caption: "Council Secretary Nabbed in Armed Robbery..." as one of the highest points of deceit employed by some local political opponents aimed at staining his intimidating profile in and outside Tai Local Government Area.

As he put it, "those who are wise or intelligent, particularly watchers of socio-political developments in Tai LGA will have no difficulty, to understand that the incident associated with my name is not only entirely false and baseless, but also pregnant with hatred and personal vendetta".

The council scribe who was also a supervisory councilor for Health and Social Services in the council said he needed not go into explaining the various loopholes in the complainants statement, even as he singled out the alleged venue of the incident which, according to the report, was Tai, his very own dear community as one of such weaknesses in the allegation.

Hon. Akpene emphasized that there was nothing under this sun that can push him into such crimes considering the level he has attained in life "talkless of the sum (N60, 000.00) and place (his hometown) which further underline the recklessness of the allegation".

A former deputy leader in the Tai local Council Legislature, Hon. Akpene refused to be dragged into discussing his accuser, but rather went philosophical saying, "doing so would amount to childishness since God Almighty is alive and will surely reward us accordingly".

He thanked those who rallied round him while his interrogation with the law enforcement agents lasted on the matter, adding that the public have already understood that the whole allegation was a fabricated mendacity.

Meanwhile, the Tai council secretary alleged during the chat with newsmen that he perceived what looked like an attempt by undisclosed persons in his native home to tamper with his precious life.

The claim, he continued, was based on a reliable source available to him who, he said, was still been scrutinized before adopting the appropriate option adding that he would make further comment on the alleged robbery incident after the on-going investigations might have been concluded.
