THIS may be bad news for airline operators and the flying public: The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says it cannot remove the crash-landed aircraft of Chanchangi Airlines from the scene of the incident.
Managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Mohammed Umar, broke the startling news yesterday in Lagos. He revealed that the agency does not have the equipment to tow away the aircraft which crash-landed at the local terminal of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
Umar stated this during an official visit to the Presidential Lodge in the airport yesterday. He was there to inspect the on-going renovation work at the lodge.
On the repairs of the runway, Umar said: "We have to work on the estimate. By tomorrow (today), work will start there. The problem with the runway was not that of drainage. Rather, it was as a result of the intensity of the rain at that particular period."
Umar assured that the flooded runway would be given serious attention by FAAN. The runway was slated for completion in March but Umar said "FAAN is waiting for the airfield lighting to be installed before work on the runway starts."
Speaking of on-going airport projects across the country, the FAAN chief disclosed that the Kastina Airport was being developed progressively. He said that Boeing 727 aircraft could now land at the facility but added that passenger traffic was low to and from the state.
His words: "The number of passengers that lands in the airport depends on the economy of the state."
