Police free killer-cow on bail

POLICE in Lagos have granted freedom to a stray cow which was arrested last week for allegedly causing the death of three persons.

POLICE in Lagos have granted freedom to a stray cow which was arrested last week for allegedly causing the death of three persons.

The freedom, Daily Champion gathered, became necessary following arrest of the owner of the cow and the need to save the animal from death.

Such death could arise from possible starvation and neglect pending arraignment.

Lagos State Police command spokesman, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni told Daily Champion that the cow was released to a notable cow rearer and dealer in the Ojo area of the state on bond.

According to him, decision to release the cow on bail was in line with police rules on domestic and perishable exhibits.

He said the police are not trained to take care of animals like cows, thus the need to hand the exhibit over to an experienced handler pending trial.

Ojajuni denied that there were attempts by policemen at the Trade Fair Complex on Badagry road, where the cow was arrested, to kill it for consumption.

He, however, said the owner of the cow would soon be arraigned in court for negligent conduct under Section 334 of the Criminal Code, even as he said the state police command would be responsible for upkeep of the cow till the matter ends.

In another development Ojajuni said a middle-aged security guard attached to an insurance company at Idiroko, identified as Mr. Prince Lebi, has been shot dead by armed robbers.

He said the guard lost his life to a gang of robbers who attacked him in a bid to free their colleague, who was being detained by the guard.

According to him, trouble started for the guard after he apprehended a robbery suspect, whom he detained alleged for a ransom.

Ojajuni said the guard had taken money from the gang in the bid to release their colleague to them, adding that after the payment, the gang returned and shot the guard, killing him and wounding a friend, who is now on admission at a Lagos hospital.
