LINCOLN, Neb. -- Officials said a refugee from Nigeria convicted in the traffic death of a parade bystander five years ago in Lincoln will not be deported.
Tony Waadah walked out of a jail in Eldora, Iowa, Wednesday. Waadah told the Lincoln Journal Star that he feels great.
Police said Waadah lost control of his car and struck and killed Connie McCullough, 39, of Firth, Neb., as she watched a parade in July 2000. Waadah was convicted of manslaughter and served 11 months in prison before being released on parole in February.
But Waadah was detained in Hastings and in Eldora pending a deportation hearing. Waadah said he would face almost certain death if deported because of his role in protesting civil rights in Nigeria a decade ago.
An immigration judge in Chicago terminated Waadah's case Thursday. Waadah was released when immigration officials declined to appeal.
