... Cart away cash as fears mount they may have been assassins
Chris Ekpeyong, Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State was not around when the robbers struck. He has not been as steady in the office since current moves to get him out began.
That may have been his saving grace, some say.
As the crisis which began with a mere invitation to appear before the State House of Assembly escalated, security around the deputy governor was allegedly withdrawn.
The robbers who ransacked everything in his office are believed to have made away with an unspecified amount of money.
A man-hunt mounted shortly after the raid that some describe as an alleged assassination attempt yielded little result.
There were no traces of the robbers within the neighbourhood that houses the office of the deputy governor.
Could it have been an inside job or a mere hoax?
No one in Uyo is sure.
What is evident is that some arrests may have been made in the deputy governor's office.
This, analysts and security experts suggest may lend weight to the thinking that the robbery could have been plotted with some insiders in the know.
As at the time of going to press, no further information had emerged and Christopher Tom, our man on the spot shuttled between the State House of Assembly and the police to update his report on the brewing crisis in Akwa Ibom State.
Not many agree that the deputy governor has been walking in the same direction with the governor whose popularity among ordinary Akwa Ibomites appear to soaring by the day.
It is difficult to say at this stage who exactly is spearheading the Ekpeyong-must-go- move.
What is obviously clear at the moment is that Ekpeyong has fallen out of favour, with several people believed to be in favour of his removal from office.
As things are, his job appears seriously threatened
But Epkeyong, knowledgeable sources reveal has not handled matters well.
They say confrontation does not appear to be the best solution to the problem before him.
