A young man has been cut down in his prime during a communal clash in the Onireke area of Lagos.
The fight, which was between the youths of Irede and Ibasa, broke out at a burial ceremony. According to an eyewitness, the youths had gathered to bury Pa Surakatu Lawal who was like a father to them.
" We were at the burial of Pa Lawal when the fracas started. I don't know what caused it, but it was initially very minor. Before we knew what was happening, Madu, who is the Commander of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), in Irede, stabbed Abu Olojede who was from Ibasa in the chest. He slumped and died immediately."
Another eyewitness said: "The fight was not actually between Madu and Abu. Some guys were quarrelling over money. All of a sudden, Amusa called his OPC boys and they turned the fight into a big one.'
The death of Abu, who was a motor boat operator, ignited the clash. Youths of Ibasa stormed Irede and set the houses in the area ablaze. They also set Madu's house on fire. Youths of Iredes retaliated but were stopped by some members of the community before the matter escalated. Policemen were alerted and they stormed the area and got Madu arrested.
Madu, however, denied killing Abu. He said: "Though I was at the party I was not the one that killed Abu,"
Abu, before his death was happily married with three children.
